Any child of the seventies will tell you it was a really strange time in Britain’s history and this 80-song combination of glam rock hits and misses is a musical manifestation of all that national weirdness, from energy blackouts to openly racist prime time TV shows. Big-name glam acts like Slade and The Sweet dominated the charts throughout the mid-seventies, but as always with musical movements, it meant that there were plenty of bandwagon jumpers of variable quality.
Like Northern Soul, you’ll know an authentic glam record as soon as you hear it: usually big guitars, a stomping singalong chorus, maybe some brass and often daft lyrics. Some of the 80 tracks here are glam, many are borderline and quite a lot are not even close.
A lot of the big names are represented here, so you hear genuine glam tracks from The Sweet, Wizzard, Mud and Suzi Quatro, as well some who were more rock, like AC/DC singer Brian Johnson’s first band, Geordie, and some acts that were just bloody awful, or a bit odd – like Small Wonder’s dreadful parody of T-Rex on Ride a Black Sheep.
The opening tracks are typical of Teenage Glampage, as U.K. Jones’ Let Me Tell Ya is pure glam and then novelty act Lieutenant Pigeon, with the songwriter’s elderly mum Hilda on piano, pop up with The Villain. Things Fall Apart’s Bye Bye My Rose has a big old glam chorus, as does Whistle’s The Party Must Be Over, matched by Winston’s Mona. God help us, but kings of bandwagon jumpers – and so called comedy act – The Barron Knights have a go at glam with Turning My Back On You, which is just as awful as you might imagine. Glamrock stamped its imprint on the UK Pop scene in the Seventies, and perhaps overstayed its welcome. But while it reigned supreme, it produced countless unforgettable pop songs.
