Ken Hensley | Past & Present (Songs In Time): A Ken Hensley Anthology 1972-2021 (2023)

ken hensley past & present

A name synonymous with Uriah Heep, Ken Hensley was a founder member of the British prog legends and, during the 1970s, was the keyboard player, occasional guitarist and principle song writer. Right up to his passing in 2020, he was a prolific performer and writer.
He recorded some solo work during his tenure with the band, and once the post split bad feelings eased, had been known to join the band on stage on occasion, and his solo work continued, as well as recording with John Lawton, John Wetton, Wasp and Blackfoot.
This fine fine box, up to the usual high Cherry Red standards and covers a breadth of material well. But with the plethora out there, it’s both a good summary and a good starting point. Now Spinning Magazine

Ken Hensley: Past & Present (Songs In Time): A Ken Hensley Anthology 1972-2021

Audio CD:

The late Ken Hensley had been steadily accumulating cultural stock since 1970. His ability to write poetic, melodic rock’n’roll is well known in the music industry worldwide. His reputation grew exponentially as he converted that ability into many best selling successes, both with Uriah Heep and as a solo performer. It would be impossible to reduce the man’s career to a handful of discs, so credit to Cherry Red for shoehorning so many key tracks into 6 CDs. The set is a neat construction, taking us back to the beginning, then dallying for a while in the early 2000s, then fast forwarding to the millennium’s second decade. Get Ready To Rock

Two years on from Ken Hensley’s death, this compilation provides fans with a first panoramic view across his entire career. At the same time, it completes something of a trilogy of Cherry Red releases, all reviewed by Velvet Thunder, which began with Ken Hensley: The Bronze Years 1973-1981 and continued with Tale Of Live Fire And Other Mysteries. The former consisted of the three albums from his early career while the latter covered the fertile period 2012-13 (mostly with his band at the time, Live Fire). Three of the six CDs in this anthology overlap partially with those two previous compilations, while the other three CDs fill in the missing pieces, so to speak, by presenting 1990’s A Glimpse Of Glory, 2002’s Running Blind, and The Last Dance from 2003.
