The 11-time Juno Award winning artist’s Feist first release since 2017’s critically-acclaimed ‘Pleasure’ is out April 14 via Interscope Records. Multitudes took shape soon after the birth of Feist’s daughter and the sudden death of her father. Amid meditations on mortality, connection and the frenetic state of the human condition, the record ultimately radiates an ineffable sense of hope.
Feist says: “The last few years were such a period of confrontation for me, and it feels like it was at least to some degree for everyone. We confronted ourselves as much as our relationships confronted us. It felt like our relational ecosystems were clearer than ever and so whatever was normally obscured- like a certain way of avoiding conflict or a certain way of talking around the subject- were all of a sudden thrust into the light. And in all that reassessment, the chance to find footing on healthier, more honest ground became possible, and the effort to maintain avoidance actually felt like it took more effort than just handing ourselves over to the truth.” udiscovermusic
Feist: Multitudes
Feist is back! For the past two years, Feist has been performing her Multitudes concert series, which premiered new music – written improvisationally on the road – and featured an immersive, in-the-round setup.
And now, that music is getting an official release. Her sixth studio album Multitudes is arriving April 14 on Interscope, and she’s previewing it today with three new songs; “In Lightning” is a clamorous, percussive beast of a track, while “Hiding Out in the Open” and “Love Who We Are Meant To” are gentler acoustic numbers draped in strings. exclaim
Over the past two years, Feist played a series of intimate concerts dubbed Multitudes, which featured the premiere of new music and a special in-the-round performance setup. The shows were created with the aim of bringing people together as they emerged from lockdown. During one of the last stops, she ended up harmonizing with an electrical buzzing sound in the basement of a venue and, in true Feist fashion, turned it into an improvised song.
Feist wrote most of the songs for her new album during her tour. “The last few years were such a period of confrontation for me, and it feels like it was at least to some degree for everyone,” she said in a press statement. “We confronted ourselves as much as our relationships confronted us. It felt like our relational ecosystems were clearer than ever and so whatever was normally obscured-like a certain way of avoiding conflict or a certain way of talking around the subject-were all of a sudden thrust into the light. And in all that reassessment, the chance to find footing on healthier, more honest ground became possible, and the effort to maintain avoidance actually felt like it took more effort than just handing ourselves over to the truth.” Pitchfork
Multitudes will mark Feist’s first album in six years, following 2017’s Pleasure. The LP was largely written on Feist’s recent tour of the same name, then recorded at a studio in Northern California’s Redwood Forest.
Feist produced the record with Robbie Lackritz and Mocky, and enlisted the help of multi-instrumentalists Gabe Noel, Shahzad Ismaily, and her touring bandmates Todd Dahlhoff and Amir Yaghmai. Rolling Stone
