Alison Goldfrapp | The Love Invention (2023)

alison_goldfrapp_vm233

Synth-pop icon Alison Goldfrapp has released her eagerly anticipated debut solo album, The Love Invention, via Skint/BMG. The Love Invention was executively produced and co-written by Alison Goldfrapp and features collaborations with production mastermind Richard X (Pet Shop Boys, M.I.A.), James Greenwood (Daniel Avery, Kelly Lee Owens), and Toby Scott (The Gossip, Annie). The 11-track album is bursting at the seams with anthemic synth-led jaunts and unrivaled pop music innovation. From the infectious disco strut of recent single ‘Love Invention’, to the tantalizing electro stomp of ‘Neverstop’, and the acid-house tinged ‘So Hard So Hot’. All of the aforementioned tracks released alongside a video vignette directed in collaboration with Mat Maitland. BMG

VA_gary_crowleys

Following on from the highly popular first volume of Gary Crowley’s Punk & New Wave, Demon Records are proud to introduce Vol.2. “Alongside my rhythm pal Jim Lahat, we’ve once again pillaged our respective music collections to bring you a highly personal and extremely eclectic selection of gems, mined from the rich seam that was the late ‘70s/early ‘80s.”
A period when a raft of bands and artists imbued a new energy into the country’s musical culture. This mega 77 track collection features some of the biggest names from this period such as The Clash, Ramones, The Jam, The Cure and The Slits. Alongside the bigger names Gary & Jim also shine a light on the lesser known bands, those who might have left just the one great single in their wake such as The Limit, Gary Valentine, The Wardens, Basement 5 and The Limps. Many of these incredibly rare tracks appearing here for the very first time on CD.

Beach House | Become EP (2023)

beach_house_become

New EP of previously unreleased material from the sessions for Beach House 2022 album, Once Twice Melody. The Become EP is a collection of 5 songs from the Once Twice Melody sessions. We didn’t think they fit in the world of OTM, but later realized they all fit in a little world of their own. To us, they are all kind of scuzzy and spacious, and live in the spirit realm. It’s not really where we are currently going, but it’s definitely somewhere we have been. We hope you enjoy these tunes, Alex and Victoria/Beach House. Sub Pop Records

The Veils | …And Out Of The Void Came Love (2023)

the_veils_and_out

Breaking a 7-year hiatus, The Veils make a striking return with the release of ‘And Out of the Void Comes Love.’ Recorded in New Zealand, the double album is the result of a tumultuous period of injury, isolation, and new life. Andrews crafted the music slowly and deliberately, playing the left and right hands’ piano parts separately to construct the album around his injury and evoke his emotion through every chord. It is an album intended to be listened to in two sittings with a short break in the middle, or as Andrews instructs: “Make a coffee or smoke a cigarette – but don’t mow the lawn or go to the movies or something, that takes too long.”
Composer Victoria Kelly’s soaring string arrangements play an integral role in bringing the songs to life, as do musicians Cass Basil (bass), Dan Raishbrook (lap steel, guitar), Liam Gerrard (piano), Joseph McCallum (drums) the NZTrio and special guests the Smoke Fairies on backing vocals. Ba Da Bing!

VA | Eddie Piller Presents British Mod Sounds of the 1960s Volume 2: The Freakbeat and Psych Years (2023)

eddie piller presents british mod sounds vol2

Curated by Acid Jazz Records and Modcast founder Eddie Piller, “British Mod Sounds of The 1960s Volume 2: The Freakbeat & Psych Years” is the follow up to the hugely successful “British Mod Sounds of The 1960s”, featuring 95 original tracks across a 4CD set – a deep dive into the post-Mod scene in ’60s Britain. Featuring a selection of classic and rare tracks, tracing the scene from early ’65 to the dawn of a new decade.
Even before Demon’s well received 2022 box set ‘British Mod Sounds of The 1960s’ was released conversations were being had around a follow-up, though rather than just offering a straight if slightly diluted second volume, compiler Eddie Piller decided to put together a collection exploring “What the Mods did next”. Once again, long conversations (and the occasional heated debate) were had to ensure the quality of music and attention to detail were second to none. Anything less just wouldn’t be the Mod way. The British Mod bands that had made the first half of the decade so exciting were still around but inevitably their influences had changed. Demon Music Group

Rufus Wainwright | Folkocracy (2023)

rufus_wainwright_folkocracy

Rufus Wainwright will release new album ‘Folkocracy’ on June 2nd. The new album was completed in the run up to his 50th birthday, and it finds Rufus reflecting on some of his earliest influences. The songwriter was brought up around music, with parents Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright obviously working in the folk sphere. ‘Folkocracy’ finds Rufus Wainwright paying homage to this realm, working alongside producer Mitchell Froom and a mouth-watering list of guests. He comments:
“This album is almost like a recorded birthday party and birthday present to myself. I just invited all the singers that I greatly admire and always wanted to sing with.“ CLASH
Folkocracy is Rufus Wainwright revisiting his roots, of childhood summers spent at folk festivals and watching his famous family on stage. But it’s also the sound of an artist in the present, flanked by an incredible array of guests, using all he has learnt from conquering pop to make music worthy of awards. It was during 2021’s Grammys ceremony that the idea for an album of folk reinventions came to Rufus. rufuswainwright.com

elton_john_honky_château

UMe announces the 50th-anniversary reissue of Elton John’s Honky Château. Available to pre-order now on 2CD, 2LP and limited-edition gold vinyl LP, the album is released on March 24th. “Rocket Man (Live at The Festival Hall, London 1972)” and “Mellow” (Session Demo) are also unveiled as the first instant grats available from Honky Château 50th Anniversary Edition. The line-up of Davey Johnstone (guitar), Dee Murray (bass) and Nigel Olsson (drums) immediately established itself as the core of the “classic” Elton band, solidifying Elton’s studio and stage presence through his most prolific period.
