Dean Owens | El Tiradito (The Curse of Sinner’s Shrine) (2023)

dean_owens_el_tiradito_vm231

Hot on the heels of 2022’s smash Sinner’s Shrine comes its “little brother”. El Tiradito (The Curse Of Sinner’s Shrine) is a double album (2 CDs in a beautifully designed 6 panel digipak), again featuring members of desert noir icons CALEXICO, and recorded partly at WaveLab Studio, Tucson AZ and partly in various home studios from Tucson to Berlin via Pencaitland.
Disc 1 features songs from the long since sold out Desert Trilogy EPs, while Disc 2 is an all new, all instrumental “theme for an imaginary Western” inspired by the story behind Tucson landmark El Tiradito (the Sinner’s Shrine). Stories of love and lust, sinners and saints, the displaced, the wanderers and the border ghosts. Dean Owens

Sufjan Stevens, Timo Andres & Conor Hanick | Reflections (2023)

reflections_vm_230

“I’m constantly thinking about bodies moving through space when I’m writing for ballet – that is what has informed this music, first and foremost,” says Sufjan Stevens on Reflections, his latest collaboration with choreographer Justin Peck. Originally commissioned and performed by Houston Ballet in 2019, Reflections was written for two pianos and eleven dancers. A studio recording of the seven movements is now available; engineered, mixed and mastered by Ryan Streber with performances by pianists Timo Andres and Conor Hanick. Released via Asthmatic Kitty Records, Reflections is, in Stevens words, about “energy, light and duality.” This piece follows on from several scores Stevens has created with Peck, including Year of the Rabbit (2012), Everywhere We Go (2014), In the Countenance of Kings (2016), The Decalogue (2017) and Principia (2019). “We have been working together for many years now,” says Stevens. “We respect and trust each other’s work.” Peck and Stevens are currently collaborating on a dance theater piece based on Stevens’ songs from the acclaimed album, Illinois, to premiere at Fisher Center at Bard in June of 2023. The Lemonheads | Come on Feel [30th Anniversary Edition] (2023)

the_lemonheads_vm_227

Expanded 30th anniversary re-issue of The Lemonheads’ classic 1993 album. The breakthrough record that took American alt rock global and catapulted Evan Dando into the hearts of a generation. With a wealth of unreleased demos, alternative versions and rarities – including covers of Victoria Williams, Buddy Holly and The Flying Burrito Brothers plus The Lemonhead’s take on the Cole Porter standard ‘Miss Otis Regrets’.
In the 90’s Evan’s Lemonheads produced hit after a hit, a string of super cool singles: ‘Big Gay Heart’, ‘Into Your Arms’, ‘It’s About Time’, and ‘The Great Big NO’. Pure genius filling the radio waves and taking the stage… Some 30 years on; Evan is still knocking that song writing thing out of the park and ‘Come On Feel The Lemonheads’ sounds as fresh and perky as it ever did. Amid the hits on the original record are stencils and outlines for yet more magical music and now this deluxe edition adds a second disc of demos and acoustic versions, plus a host of one-offs from sessions and compilations that add further colour to the myth and how it was created.

Talking Heads | Stop Making Sense (2023)

talking_heads_stop_making_sense

At the start of their career, Talking Heads were all nervous energy, detached emotion, and subdued minimalism. When they released their last album about 12 years later, the band had recorded everything from art-funk to polyrhythmic worldbeat explorations and simple, melodic guitar pop. Between their first album in 1977 and their last in 1988, Talking Heads became one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the ’80s, while managing to earn several pop hits. While some of their music can seem too self-consciously experimental, clever, and intellectual for its own good, at their best Talking Heads represent everything good about art-school punks. AllMusic
Stop Making Sense full concert for the first time ever on vinyl. 2 LP with a reproduction of the original booklet from the 1984 limited edition pressing and additional pages with never before seen photos. Includes brand new notes written by Chris, David, Jerry and Tina. The tracklist includes previously unreleased tracks “Cities” and “Big Business/I Zimbra.”

Marillion | Seasons End [Deluxe Edition] (2023)

marillion_seasons_end

Packed full of bonus content, the album has had a fresh 2023 Stereo Remix by Mike Hunter, alongside a new documentary, liner notes by Rich Wilson, and brand-new artwork. Originally released in 1989, Seasons End was Marillion’s fifth studio album and first with Steve Hogarth fronting the band, following the departure of former frontman Fish, spanning three singles; Hooks In You, The Uninvited Guest and Easter which all went on to chart in the UK. As well as a change in vocals, Seasons End also marked a change in visual identity with the band, which has been reflected in the 2023 deluxe edition of the album. At the time there was a desire for a change of direction from the more illustrative style of Mark Wilkinson’s artwork & logo, replacing that with a more photographic graphic style provided by Bill Smith Studio & Carl Glover who went on to work with the band over the coming years.

Avishai Cohen

Iroko launches Avishai Cohen’s longtime dream “to do a Latin project with his favourite Latin musicians in New York. ”The Israel-based bassist-singer and master conguero-vocalist Abraham Rodriguez Jr. brim with tunefulness, grooves, warmth, indelible melodies and the bonds of brotherhood to summon Yoruba gods.
In Yoruba lore, Irokois a complicated symbol-a troll inhabiting the top branches of a tree called “the throne of god,” guarded against lest he come to earth, be seen and drives men mad. But Iroko, the Frenchnaïve label’s unique release by singer-bassist Avishai Cohen and conguero-vocalist Abraham Rodriguez Jr., brims with tunefulness, groove and warmth. It has deep roots in esoteric religion and popular song and comes naturally from these 30-year cross-cultural collaborators who ward off trouble, united in musical spirit.
